RUG Miracle Wolf Run [Aug. 25th, 2012|09:52 am]

I went 1-3 with this last night at FNM.  Pretty disappointing, but I'm pretty sure it's because I wasn't running four Bonfires.  I should also probably start running Slagstorms & Whipflares.

This deck is based on one run by the Belgium team, though with several differences. I won a local, 32-person FNM with it recently. ^.^

Though the Huntmasters and Whipflares seem like they're conflicting, they simply aren't. More often than not you'll play a Whipflare on turn 2, 3, or 4, and you can always wait to play your Huntmaster. Featuring life gain; wuffy tokens; and a huge, trampling body + damage on the flip side, this guy can turn games around by himself, and against a control deck he can single-handedly win you the game if it goes unanswer.

The sideboard is still in flux, as is the manabase.

For land I'm trying out a 3rd Cavern because being able to ignore my opponents counters to run out a Huntmaster or Thragtusk on turn 4 was always devistating. I want a 3rd P. Core, but I'm not eager to cut the Buried ruin, nor go up to 8 colorless sources. I'm also running 24 land and 3 posts instead of 4 posts and 23 land. Not sure which I think is better.

There are a number of matchups I haven't gotten to test yet, so I'm not certain where the deck is weak and where it can get by. I love Beast Within because it's an incredibly versatile instant that hits enchantments, equipment, titans, and planeswalkers alike. A resolved Karn is a powerful tool against control decks, and can deal with cards like Wurmcoil Engine or planeswalkers. The Cage is good against zombies, and Torpor Orb completely shuts down Birthing Pod decks. Surgical extraction is good against both zombies and control, and Blasphemous Act is good against ramp and any creature strategy. The ancient grudge is to get at a second one to handle more equipment, and the ratchet bomb is good against token decks and control decks that lean on Lingering Souls or Entreat the Angels.

Also worth considering: 3rd Tumble Magnet/Bonfire/Metamorph, Zealous Conscripts, 4th Thragtusk/Huntmaster.

Grixis Tezzeret, the Goat Herder [Jul. 26th, 2012|12:43 pm]

This deck is a lot of fun, and surprisingly strong. I'm still uncertain about which mana artifact I want in there, and I think that will sort itself out with some more playtesting. I'm also not sure if I'd rather have Sorin in there instead of either (or both) of the sideboard planeswalkers. Still, there's something terribly appealing about a deck that can cast Nicol Bolas. ^.^ The mana base seems good, but might still require some tweaks as well.

Standard Naya Pod [May. 20th, 2012|05:15 pm]
MTGFurs

direwolf23
Though I didn't do so great at the PTQ I went to with this, I don't think it was because of the deck. One game I missed a game-winning play, and another an opponent who mulled to 4 card top-decked two Bonefire of the Damned to beat me when I threatened lethal. The other game I simply mulliganed a lot and couldn't draw out of it. >.<

Really the only change I could see making to this deck is adding another mana guy. It's strange to think that with 30 mana sources between land an creatures still wanting more, but that's what it felt like. Specifically, it wants to cast a 3 cost spell on turn two every game. Atm I can't see anything I want to cut for it, even land, so I might just make the deck 61 cards. That doesn't strike me as great, so if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Creatures
4x Huntmaster of the Fells
4x Birds of Paradise
4x Bladesplicer
3x Strangleroot Geist
2x Daybreak Ranger
2x Avacyn's Piligrim
1x Zealous Conscripts
1x Hellrider
1x Phyrexian Metamorph
1x Wurmcoil Engine
1x Acidic Slime
1x Solemn Simulacrum
1x Inferno Titan

Spells
2x Bonfire of the Damned

Artifacts
4x Birthing Pod
2x Sword of War and Peace

Enchantments
2x Oblivion Ring

Land
4x Copperline Gorge
4x Razorverge Thicket
3x Rootbound Crag
3x Sunpetal Grove
2x Gavony Township
6x Forest
1x Mountain
1x Plains

Sideboard
2x Arc Trail (Probably should be Day of Judgment or more Bonfires)
2x Act of Treason
2x Celestial Purge
2x Manabarbs
1x Ray of Revelation
1x Ancient Grudge
1x Naturalize
1x Oblivion Ring
1x Archon of Justice
1x Sword of Feast and Famine
1x Zealous Conscripts

One odd thing about playing this deck was that I found even after having added a dedicated podding chain up through the converted mana costs, only once during the entire tournament did I play or pod into a 6 drop, making me wonder if they're not too slow for the format or this deck. It might make sense to just put two more heavy hitters in the 4 or 5 slot. *shrugs* Then again, I can imagine a Titan or Wurmcoil completely swinging games against Humans or R/G Aggro.

This decks most difficult matchup seemed to be against U/W planeswalker control. Not sure what would help there, but maybe it just depends on draws. O-rings, swords, and manabarbs are all really good against them, so is a lot of early pressure. Any suggestions are welcome.
